One of the finest Valbuenas available, showcasing great depth, structure and detail while remaining polished. It exhibits notes of blackberries, cocoa powder, graphite, and high-quality sandalwood, with hints of lard and violets. The standout feature this year is the quantity and quality of the tannins—huge, yet incredibly refined and polished. There are plenty of fine grits that aren’t fully integrated but should harmonize in two to three years. Exceptionally long finish. Will hold effortlessly for the next 20 years. 176,000 bottles produced.

It's not a surprise that the 2021 Valbuena is so distinguished, given the quality of the 2021 vintage in Ribera del Duero. Blending Tempranillo and 4% Merlot from the extensive Vega Sicilia estate, this is a younger-vine cuvée from ten to 20-year-old parcels. Curated in 75% new French and 25% American oak, followed by extra time in foudres, it has the structure, focus and intensity of an outstanding year, with subtle aromas of toast, vanilla and graphite, layers of liquorice, plum and blackberry and succulent, fine-grained tannins. Deceptively approachable, this is a wine to cellar and savour.

The 2021 Valbuena comes from a year with pristine grapes, good ripeness and balance. For them, this is one of their finest years, when they didn't have to rush and everything happened in a smooth way. The year was marked by the snowstorm Filomena in January, which provided good water reserves, and the rest of the winter had temperatures reaching minus 15 degrees Celsius! This is a blend of 96% Tinto Fino (a local clone of Tempranillo) and 4% Merlot aged in barrels and 8,500- and 21,000-liter oak vats during the first year and later on only in oak vats. This is the youngest expression of the "Vega" nose—subtler and elegant, more insinuating, less developed and keeping some primary notes; it's not as tertiary as the Únicos. It comes in at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.85 and 4.65 grams of acidity, and it has a medium- to full-bodied palate, with elegant tannins and very good balance. This is one of the finest recent vintages for Valbuena, and in a way, it reminded me of the 2010, with elegance and precision. A total of 176,876 bottles, 5,566 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Product Description:

When Vega Sicilia became part of the Álvarez family's life in 1982, the foundations were laid for TEMPOS Vega Sicilia. It has constantly and steadily grown since then, involving the introduction of wines produced in different wine-making areas, reaching out to new consumers around the world and laying the foundations for a promising and highly successful future. The driveway to Vega Sicilia is flanked by its splendid Japanese garden, where the visitor is welcomed by the wealth of bamboo, sequoias or maples. The elegant main façade in facing brick, with the main feature being the entrance of what was the chapel of the group of buildings that made up the estate, is on the other side of the drive. As you come out of the back of the building, you enter the entrails of the winery, a series of buildings that house the different production zones. You first come to the winemaking facility, with its stainless steel tanks, in perfect rows, where the Valbuena 5Âș (which is aged for 5 years) is produced. The second floor is home to the laboratory and control room, where computer calculations are used to control all the processes involved in making the wines. In the same building, but separated by huge sliding doors, there is a type of semi-circular frontispiece with 19 oak tanks where the wines that will have Único - made only in exceptional years and aged for a minimum of 10 years - are fermented. As you leave the winemaking facility, you come to the cooperage building, where under the supervision of the master cooper, and using state-of-the-art machinery, the American oak barrels are made that Vega Sicilia uses to age its wines. There is a series of warehouses adjoining the cooperage building and where the ancillary items - plant health products, packaging, auxiliary machinery, etc - are stored. This all creates a uniform architectural complex where the main emphasis is on tidiness and cleanliness. You then come to the bottling facility, a climate-controlled building with the ideal humidity and temperature for the wine to be in the bottle. The wines are left to rest here after they have been aged in barrels until they are released on the market. Finally, the ageing rooms are on the ground floor of the main building. Over 3,000 barrels are left to peacefully rest inside warehouses designed to ensure calm and perfect harmony: floors made out of red clay mosaic that spreads up the side walls of the building until it merges with a corrugated ceiling made out of wood slats, perfectly fitted together, which recall the inside of a huge barrel; the climate control elements, along with the auxiliary tanks used for decanting, are hidden behind sliding doors similar to the roofs located at the roof beds of the warehouses, with the same barrel-like appearance; the lighting ranges from a warm golden ambient tone to the intense cold light projected from the foot of the granite columns holding up the roof beams, which is needed to carry out the warehouse tasks. These buildings are surrounded by vineyards and, at the end of the estate, where it borders on the River Duero, by plantations of oaks, cork and walnut trees that in future will provide the raw material for the corks and barrels that the coming generations will produce. Discretely set apart, the neoclassical mansion stands in the middle of the gardens that are overlooked by the main façade of the winery. It was the former residence of the owners of the estate and is now used to welcome VIPs, host lunches and other formal occasions. A wine that shows us the splendour of each vintage based on the wisdom of the past and the wealth of the present. A mellow, passionate and living style that year after year, challenge after challenge, harvest after harvest reinterprets its style to keep its essence intact. Valbuena, is the purest expression of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Vega Sicilia. Tinto Fino is clearly the predominant wine in the assemblage of the varieties that make up this magnificent wine. The other variety used is Merlot, which is added to a greater or lesser extent depending on the vintage. The Valbuena Tempranillo is obtained from plots located on gentle concave slopes that descend from the wasteland. Those soils are made up of material that was eroded and accumulated as colluvial on the lower slopes, developing a high profile soil, with a specific important evolution with the formation of a deep calcic horizon. Valbuena provides us with a direct and understandable view of the greatness of this "terroir" with the direct influence of each vintage. Its production remains unchanged meaning that it is each year's weather factors that mark the differences between the different harvests. Fermentation at a controlled temperature with native yeast in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel. After fermentation, it is aged for five years, between wood and in the bottle, which is why it is called Valbuena 5Âș. French and American wood, new and used 225-litre barrels, 20,000 litre vats, a long and complex process for a great wine.
