In the mythical city of Haro, capital of La Rioja Alta, perhaps where the extraordinary sum of coincidences between the goodness of the climate and the severity of the land occurs best, are the Bodegas López de Heredia, the oldest in Haro and one of the first three in La Rioja. Back in 1877, and as a result of the concerns created in the middle of the century by the arrival of French wine merchants (who came to La Rioja to solve the problems caused by phylloxera in their vineyards), Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a deep connoisseur and good student of these professionals, decided to follow in their footsteps and began to plan and build what is now the winery. So wisely and meticulously, that this kind of wine cathedral, like the authentic ones, is still unfinished and perhaps the feeling that one breathes, when stepping into its naves, of having traveled backwards in time comes from that still latent spirit of the founder. Between 1913 and 1914, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, while establishing his industrial facilities, planted the "Viña Tondonia" vineyard, giving rise to the winery's most famous product. Viña Tondonia is a beautiful vineyard of over 100 hectares, located on the right bank of the Ebro River, where the most typical Rioja grape varieties are cultivated. López de Heredia also owns three other vineyards, also located in the upper Rioja region, called "Viña Cubillo," "Viña Bosconia," and "Viña Zaconia." The vineyards cover a total area of ​​170 hectares, with an average annual production of around 800,000 kilos of grapes, which are used to produce wines of the highest quality. Their strategic location, the exceptional quality of the vines, and the varieties used are perfectly complemented by a magnificent winery, whose creation process mirrored the planting of the vineyards: slow and meticulous. Today, these facilities are a model. Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia are situated on a total area of ​​53,076 square meters, of which 19,718 are built upon, with 3,433 square meters corresponding to the underground cellar, with cellars up to 200 meters long, at a depth of more than 10 meters, drilled into the heart of a colossal block of sandstone, along whose sides extend endless rows of barrels (12,900 Bordeaux barrels are stored within its depths). CUBILLO: Color: Bright ruby. Nose: Fresh and light licorice aroma with a consistent texture and persistent scent. Taste: Fine, fresh, and persistent. Grape varieties: Tempranillo (65%), Garnacho (25%), Mazuelo and Graciano, the rest, all from our own vineyards. Barrel aging: Aged for 3 years, subjected to 2 rackings per year. Clarified with egg whites. Bottle aging: The rest, bottled unfiltered, in a 75 cl Bordeaux bottle. Alcohol content: 13.5% Vol. Total acidity: 6.5 g/L. Residual sugar: Very dry. Gastronomy: The perfect accompaniment to all kinds of legumes, tapas and various appetizers. Storage time: 10 years and more, in perfect conditions of constant temperature (14ºC) and humidity (75-80%). Serving temperature: Between 18º and 20º C. depending on time and place. Quantity produced: 94,500 bottles.
