About

Rating:

89

The 2018 Dry Riesling was sourced from Lahoma Vineyard on Seneca Lake. It comes in with three grams per liter of residual sugar, 6.45 grams of total acidity and 12.6% alcohol. Winemaker Kelby Russell said that "in an infamous vintage, we found ourselves with an outlier—a Riesling vineyard that had few disease problems and managed to hang 2.5 weeks longer than any other Riesling site I know of in the region. Rather than triage picking in early October, we picked clean and golden fruit at the end of the month and handled it as per usual. And we decided to lean into it, rather than shy away from the prevailing narrative about the harvest, and bottle an improbably opulent and ripe dry Riesling from a terrible vintage." The result in the bottle mostly seems to fairly reflect that. It is mostly wide open right now, shows plenty of fruit and fine structure, the tension on the finish obvious. Still, this seems more forward than some other vintages. The nose, though, reflects some petrol issues, and there is an overlay to the flavor and aromatic profile that wasn't my favorite. That has been a continuing theme of late with this brand. It does so much so well that many will be happy to overlook it. It may well improve, but that's never perfectly clear. Let's be a bit conservative right now. For the price point, it is still very much worth a look. There were 2,266 cases produced.
