"DWWA 2026 Silver Medal: Rich, ripe style with peaches and cream on the nose. A complex palate with notes of rocket, bay leaf and grapefruit."

92 Wine Advocate - Wine Advocate

"The Alpha Estate 2025 Malagouzia Turtles Single Vineyard is delicately floral and bright, with notes of stone fruit, honeydew melon and exotic white flowers that vaguely recall jasmine and plumeria. This unoaked wine is firm and fresh, with a mineral edge that adds zest, energy and a glossy texture. The Turtles vineyard benefits from sandy clay soils over limestone and cool mountain influences that help preserve aromatic lift and freshness. Aged on the fine lees for two months with regular stirring, the wine maintains varietal purity while gaining subtle texture. Produced in 300,000 bottles, this is a charming and accessible expression of Malagouzia, a Greek grape that enjoys enormous popularity at local tavernas, where baked feta and grilled vegetables emerge from the kitchen in the hands of frenzied waiters balancing trays overhead."

Full bottle 1,376 g. Sand and sandy clay over limestone at 620–710 m. Hand-harvested 10 September. Destemming, optical grape sorting and light crushing. Skin contact, controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks with cooling jackets, kept on lees for two months with regular stirring. TA 5.82 g, pH 3.51. Vegan. Sweetly aromatic though it is a dry wine: yellow fruit, stone fruit and floral with just a hint of almonds. Seems particularly perfumed in this vintage though it is always an aromatic variety. Almost tropical on the palate, peaches and cream, the intense aroma rescued by decent – just enough – acidity and a very very slight bitterness on the finish. An extremely aromatic wine from Alpha in 2025. Might make it a harder food match but easy to drink on its own if you like floral and sweet-fruited dry wines. Rich and mouth-filling but not my favourite style of Malagousia. Best drunk young. Julia Harding MW

Product Description:

Alpha Estate is a wine producer located in northwestern Greece in the Amyndeon region. The estate was founded in 1997 by Makis Mavridis, an experienced viticulturalist, and chemist/oenologist Angelos Latridis. The company cultivates both indigenous and international varieties and is best known for its production of Xinomavro, competing in style with the better-known Naoussa region. The 75 hectare (185 acre) single block estate was planted in the 1990s and is situated on a plateau that reaches up to 2330ft (710m) above sea level. The soil is composed of sandy clay and is planted to Xinomavro, Mavrodaphne, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, Montepulciano, Negroamaro, Barbera, Malagousia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. Alpha Estate produces a range of varietal and blended wines, highlighting both native and international varieties. Alpha Estate Red is the winery's flagship and is a popular blend of Syrah, Merlot, and ungrafted Xinomavro.Variety Composition: Malagouzia 100%. Region / Location / Vineyard: Amyndeon plateau. Amyndeon viticulture zone. North-western Macedonia. Tasting Characteristics: Brilliantly, light yellow in color with greenish tints. Strong and lively nose, typical Malagouzia, suggesting rose petal with floral aromas and sweet spices, melon, litchi with a note of honeysuckle. Round and mellow on the palate, fat but balanced, high in alcohol with plenty of finesse. Well structured, reminding the nose aromas with a hint of rosemary. A richly textured wine with superb length and balance. A classy wine with long finish and persistent aromas. Harmony: Excellently married with green salads, baked vegetables, pasta, low fat fishes and a wide variety of Greek sea food "Meze". Best served at 11ο C (51,8 ο F).
