Château Maris is a winery in Minervois La Livinière, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. A wide range of wines are made from typical Southern French grape varieties, either as single variety bottlings or multi grape blends. Table of Contents Ecological credentials The Château Maris label is used for estate grown wines. Maris Selection denotes bought in grapes. There are 32 hectares (79 acres) of estate vineyards divided into numerous small plots. Red grape varieties featuring in the estate grown portfolio include Grenache, Syrah and Carignan. Grenache Gris is used for white and rosé wines. The Maris Selection wines feature these grapes plus Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, and Viognier. Pays d'Oc Pinot Noir and Grenache are released in canned form. The winery was founded in 1997 by Robert "Bertie" Eden, the great nephew of former British Prime Minister Anthony Eden. It is now part of Cordier by Invivo. Ecological credentials The estate settled on a biodynamic approach after trials indicated that biodynamically grown vines tended to be healthier and lived longer than when pesticides were applied. The winery has since been recognized by Ecocert, Biodyvin, Demeter and BCorps. It was the first estate in the AOC Minervois La Livinière to be certified fully biodynamic. The Wine Spectator magazine has acknowledged Château Maris' direct action to combat climate change. It named the estate as one of the "five most environmentally friendly wineries in the world". Notably, the winery is made out of blocks of organic hemp straw. This reduced carbon emissions during construction, and the materials continue to capture carbon dioxide from the surroundings. Insulation properties are also excellent. Notes of dark fruits black currant. Inky purple on the glass. Natural Selection has full-bodied richness, beautifully integrated acidity, ripe tannin and no hard edges. It is soft with juicy tannins. Pair with red meat, especially filets or rib of beef.
