Jean-Louis FERRAN
Our story started in 1953, when my great grandfather discovered the “Escaravailles”. At the time, he was working for a substantial Maison in Gigondas as a wine broker. When he first came across the ruined farmhouse, it was without electricity, water or vineyards: it was love at first sight. Located on the heights of the Appellation Rasteau, overlooking the valley and facing the Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. He saw enormous potential there and finally sold his old car and borrowed money to buy this piece of paradise. For a decade, my great grand father, along with his two sons: Daniel, my grandfather and Jean-Pierre, my uncle, planted vines dreaming of one day making their own wine. They immediately chose independence by not joining a cooperative cellar. From the first harvest, they vinified their red wine that they sold to Maison de Négoce and they only released bottles of Vin Doux Naturel Rasteau, the essence of our Appellation. Gilles Ferran, my father, joined the winery in 1986, after graduating with a oenologist diploma from Montpellier. With a clear vision of the style of wine he intended to make and supported by Laurence, my mother, he vinified his first cuvées in 1999, and thus, shaped the identity of the domain. Wines that reflect him: elegant, deep, bright and on the fruit, made for sharing. With the help and goodwill of his lifelong friend, Philippe Cambie, classmate, partner in the Domaine Calendal and above all, amazingly great consultant oenologist of their generation.
Vintage 2021
This vintage gave us a fine, deep and very fresh red wine.
Vineyard
This wine comes from a vineyard called “Le Ratanaud” composed of blue clay. These hillsides, located between 330 and 350m of altitude have a south exposition, which bring freshness and perfect maturity to the wine.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-picked and sorted at the vineyard. They are fully destemmed then fermented in concrete tanks, each grape separately. Vatting time is between 28 to 35 days with daily grape-treading and pumping-over. Ageing is then in concrete tanks for fifteen months.
Tasting notes
Intense red colour. Pleasant nose of raspberry liquor and wild pepper. The palate is full and smooth, with cherry and licorice stick aromas.
