James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com
Flint and spice come through clearly, showing a higher level of reduction in the winemaking and providing intensity and intrigue to the wine. It's medium-bodied, linear and very racy with a bright, lightly phenolic finish. Drink or hold.
Product Description:
Quite simply,
producing Fine Wines
This short maxim represents a big promise for Olivier Leflaive. First of all, respecting the love of the terroir that has been handed down through the generations. Contributing to the reputation of the region, and preserving the soul and personality of the wines through a plot-based approach. But it is also the promise of embodying values and always following our convictions. It is also, and above all, the promise of sparking dreams thanks to an emotional approach to the way the wines are experienced. Hence, from the vine to the glass, the family-run winery, authentic and ancestral, has become a guarantee of quality over the past 40 years. The family, a state of mind
Passing on the family spirit and sharing it is a vocation that the House owes to its history and heritage.
When Olivier, its founder, talks about the road he has travelled, he describes it as a series of chances and opportunities: the chance to be born into a Burgundy family and the opportunity to discover a life of sharing among great wines; the chance to have experienced the world of music in Paris and the opportunity it gave for some unique encounters; the chance to be in the right place at the right time and the opportunity to create his own wine house. But above all, this opportunity stems from a state of mind: being open to others, and being prepared to welcome into the family, in the broadest sense, all those who wish to join it.More than an estate, a great House
Being a family-run wine house, means a commitment to passing on a passion while taking care of others. The estate was created in 1984, and has developed in this way ever since. While the reputation of the House has been forged on its high quality requirements, vintage after vintage, it also knows how to challenge itself to keep its promise: striving for quality, and guaranteeing its consistency. Winemaking, a team effort
Although Maison Olivier Leflaive has grown considerably since it was founded in 1984, its philosophy has not changed, because winemaking is above all a team effort. The House bears the name of its founder Olivier Leflaive, but now employs almost 50 people. Oenologist, vineyard manager, farm workers, cellar master, cellar workers, sales staff, all share the same goal. More than merely promoting the region’s wines, the House aims to promote Burgundy and Burgundians. Its name derives from "Pul" which means "marais": marsh. Puligny is on small pockets of water which prevent building underground cellars. A demanding vintage. 2023 is now seen as the hottest year with the temperatures above seasonal averages. This vintage is also characterized by significant water deficit during the growing season and strong disease pressure. We also noticed strong heterogeneities in maturity with dynamics that are difficult to anticipate. The harvest was generous, allowing us to carry out a thorough sorting, especially on the Pinot Noir. The appellation lies at the bottom of the hillside, on brown soil stretching from Meursault in the north to Chassagne-Montrachet in the south. The soil there is clay-limestone with a strong presence of stones. Depending on the location, the style differs a little but always allows you to combine elegance and richness. We are lucky to have a representative from all the Climats of the appellation, 26 in total.Tasting note
A full-bodied nose, marked by an intense energy of yellow citrus fruits. On the palate, the wine is both direct and profound, with a certain power, but also a vibrant energy. The finish is incisive, intensely aromatic, and extremely complex. A superb village wine, brilliantly combining tension, energy, and depth.
