A powerful and ripe Meursault with plenty of Mirabelle plums filling out the generous medium- to full-bodied palate. Attractive interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and freshness. Matured in small oak barrels, of which one third were new. Very limited production. Drink or hold.
Product Description:
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a wine producer based in the village of Volnay in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy's southern Côte d'Or heartland. The estate was established in the mid-20th Century when Vincent Bitouzet of Volnay and Ann Prieur of Meursault married, combining their family holdings in the neighboring communes. The domaine boasts around 12 hectares (30 acres) of vineyard holdings and produces a wide range of wines including the Chardonnay-based Bourgogne Blanc (from Meursault holdings) and a Bourgogne Rouge as well as the rarer Bourgogne Passetoutgrains (both from Volnay). Village-level labels include the Meursault Les Corbins and Clos du Cromin as well as the Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons and a basic Volnay. A Bourgogne Aligoté can also be encountered. Premier Cru holdings cover a number of top sites across both Volnay and Meursault, in particular the Meursault Perrières, Charmes and Santenots as well as the Volnay-based Caillerets, Taillepieds, Mitans, Clos des Chênes, and Les Aussy. A Beaune Premier Cru (Cents Vignes) comes from a 1.2 hectare (three-acre) plot of Pinot Noir on that site – it is reportedly the only red wine produced by the estate from vines outside of Volnay. All the vineyards are estate-owned and are run organically. Fruit is hand-harvested and the portion of whole-bunches in the fermentation varies from year to year and parcel to parcel. Wines are aged in variety of vessels although the majority are aged in oak (which can be up to 20 percent new oak barrels, depending on the wine). Bitouzet works a 0.71-hectare parcel of vines in the lieu-dit Les Herbeaux in northern Meursault, adjacent to premier cru Les Malpoiriers, and planted in the early 1950s (with a portion replanted in 2010). Aged 12 months on its fine lees in 228-liter barrels, a maximum of 15% of which are new, the domaine’s Bourgogne Blanc presents as a Meursault in miniature, with sneaky power, pronounced salinity, and a tightly coiled structure that rewards a few years of cellaring.
