"Blackberry, chocolate, dried spices. Sweet, warm and upfront but a firm tether of tannin and a composed finish. They’re sure not shy of high alcohols at Rocland Estate but this wine feels pretty much in balance." CM
Chateauneuf du Pape quality ... for the price tag of a Cotes du Rhone

We are big time Cotes du Rhone fans here.  Chateauneuf du Pape as well.  What about finding a Chateauneuf du Pape caliber wine ... in a Cotes du Rhone package. That's exactly what this is. Super balanced and smooth, this is the kind of wine we sell on the floor all day long. It's absolutely perfect for all kinds of gatherings, and for mid-week drinking, this wine will deliver premium quality ... for a price tag a fraction of what you might expect.

What is a GSM blend anyway?
Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre.  As the Wine Enthusiast notes "Grenache tends to be the most dominant grape used in the Rhône blends and provides soft, spiced berry flavors and a round mouthfeel. Syrah brings out a wild side to the blend with aromas of smoked meat, black pepper and olive tapenade and is bolstered by a muscular structure. Mourvèdre adds earth tones and gamy flavors with high amounts of color pigment and tannin. "

Like the notes from the Wine Enthusiast above, many of us link the term GSM to a classic Rhone blend.   With the rise of Rhone wines in the last 15 years due to a serious run of truly outstanding vintages, consumers have found immense value in Rhone style blends, even from other areas of the world.

Enter today's special deal.

Australia is also well known for wines GSM blends, although in many cases, Shiraz plays a higher role.  However, in this case, Grenache is still the leader ... leading many to scratch their heads and wonder if this is from the Rhone ... or from down under.

Whatever you might think after tasting it, the end result ... is flat out delicious.

A closer look at Rocland Estate, the Barossa Valley ... and what makes this wine such a tremendous deal:

Much like Napa is to California, or Bordeaux is to France, Barossa is the heart and soul of Australia. This vast region can achieve wines of all styles, ranging from dry, crisp, ageworthy Riesling to big, lush, expansive Syrah, and everything in between. This dichotomy allows for a wide range of styles of wine, and is truly what makes the Barossa such an amazing growing region. Crafting balanced, Rhone style efforts is where the Barossa really makes its mark, as the dense soils, and often very old vine vineyards give winemakers an outstanding starting point with which to craft gorgeous, complex wines of sheer beauty!

"In 1999, Franc Rocca and family converted a former cow paddock into a state-of-the-art winery, to be known as Rocland Estate. Together with an experienced winemaking team, he combines to produce food friendly, approachable wines from Rocland's vineyards and surrounding contracted vineyards.

One of the smaller wine producers in the Barossa Valley, Rocland Estate prides itself on producing good quality, uniquely labelled wines.  Rocland Estate believes great wine is made from the vines, sun, rain and rich earth. The love from our vineyards to the team in the winery, we are a group of easy-going individuals, who work hard and enjoy making a great drop. Our belief is that good wine is made with passion, heart and soul. " - Winery

When our team first tasted this wine, both our Director of Retail Operations Justin Novello and our Wine Director Ian Dorin could hardly wait for the wine to arrive.  Aged 16-18 months in seasoned French barriques, this wine exhibits notes of cherries, raspberries and a touch of oak.  Expect dark cherry and chocolate on the palate with the trademark silky smooth tannins that make this wine such a fantastic, ready to drink value.

From our Wine Director, Ian Dorin - "I remember the day we tasted this, as it was a blind line up of 12 wines, and this was the run away winner. This wine shows all the polish of a far more expensive wine, and the kind of lovely texture that I get out of more premium offerings. The fruit is seamless with the touch of wood and earth tones. Super complete wine for the money!"
