Black cherry, licorice, chocolate, menthol, spice and new leather are all given an extra kick of intensity in this racy, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Pliant, creamy and expansive with terrific depth, the 2017 is super-expressive and inviting. Hints of rose petal, mint and raspberry fruit add final touches of complexity.

A quality Cream is not an oxymoron, as proven by the NV La Bota de Cream 79 “Bota NO,” a revision of the previous Botas 19 and 38 but bottled eight and five years later, respectively. This has to be around 40 years old and is sourced from Valdespino, where the Oloroso was blended with 25% sweet Pedro Ximénez possibly a century ago, so the wines have had time enough to get integrated and age together. This has 115 grams of residual sugar. It has a nose of old wine and doesn't smell sweet at all, with just a hint of carob beans and notes of concentration (coconut, rusty iron, tree bark). The palate is not that sweet and it's very powerful and concentrated, with the PX completely integrated. 900 half bottles were produced.

The 2022 Zind is a blend of two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Auxerrois from the Triassic limestone soils in the Clos Windsbuhl. The nose shines with fresh, ripe, juicy yellow apple fringed with lovely zestiness. This is light-bodied, sunny, medium-bodied, fruity and fresh, with Chardonnay's added textural pleasure. The 2021 Chablis La Moutonne Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there seems to be some decent fruit behind it. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, lemon zest and a touch of tangerine, lightly spiced towards the finish that fans out nicely. This is a decent effort in a difficult growing season. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis.

30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. The 2015 Champagne La Grande Dame Rose saw the addition of 13% red wine, all coming from the same parcel as their Coteaux Champenois, a small parcel of less than a hectare. A deeper pink/salmon hue, it’s packed with aromas of wild berries, layered spice, and crushed flowers. The palate is ripe and full, with a powerful build that’s softened out by a rounded and supple mousse, and it has a lot of length and persistence, with attractive peppery spice on the finish. It should age gracefully over the coming decades.

Steeped cherry and raspberry fruit flavors are accented by tea rose, grated ginger and blood orange zest aromatics in this graceful rosé Champagne, in a vinous style. Lively on the palate, with bright acidity and a fine mousse, plus a minerally underpinning of smoke, oyster shell and chalk notes driving the racy, well-spiced finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The 2015 La Grand Dame Rosé is a potent, vinous Champagne. Kirsch, red cherry, cinnamon, dried flowers, blood orange and rose petal fill out the layers. The addition of 14-15% stil Pinot from Bouzy lends notable textural depth in a rich, resonant Champagne that is quite impressive today. This is a decidedly Pinot-driven Rosé. Give it time in the glass to open.

A blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir (with 13% of red wine), the 2015 Brut Rosé La Grande Dame exhales a complex, elegant bouquet of red berries, flowers, spices, pastry and citrus blossom. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s perfectly balanced with a pinpoint mousse, a delicate core of fruit and an ethereal, long and mineral finish. This lovely rendition of La Grande Dame Rosé could age well over the next decade.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Isabelle is a blend of multiple sites in the Au Bon Climat portfolio, taken from the best lots in the winery. It spent 23 months in 100% new oak, long by California standards. It offers tons of aromatic, floral and spice character, but I find the fruit a bit dried out and marked by sweet oak. Nonetheless, the Isabelle is a pretty distinctive wine.

A super-concentrated, trim and age-worthy red that's structured and deep, with black cherry flavors on an elegant texture. Very focused, showing supple tannins and slightly restrained fruit, graphite, cocoa, black olive and tobacco leaf flavors. Full-bodied but still balanced. Drink now or hold.

The 2022 Petit Lion is rich and sumptuous, but much more than that in terms of its complexity and distinction. Dramatic and sweeping, the 2022 is immediately captivating. Black cherry, gravel, scorched earth, licorice and lavender infuse the 2022 with tons of nuance. In this tasting, the Petit Lion is absolutely compelling. There’s terrific depth and density here, likely because of the high percentage of Merlot. What a gorgeous wine it is.
