The straight 2021 Barolo from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli is an absolute stunner, starting with its beguiling fragrance that combines wild rose, Alpine herb, red berry, dark spice and a whiff of sun-warmed hay. All about finesse and flavor, the palate captivates with layers of wild strawberry, red cherry, star anise and crushed mint before a blood orange finish. It's bright and balanced, with vibrant acidity and a backbone of firm, refined tannins. This is still youthfully and austere and shows terrific aging potential. What a fantastic showing. The finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is going to be one of the Legendary Mayacamas, although a more modern-day version. Sporting a vivid ruby, mostly opaque hue as well as sensational aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe cherries, graphite, crayon, and cedar pencils, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, ultra-fine, ripe, perfect tannins, and a great finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. The balance, purity, and elegance paired with the subtle, inward richness and power is something. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it was never short of spectacular, with its structure and tannins becoming more evident with air. It's far from the tannic beast that some vintages from this higher elevation terroir on Mount Veeder can be, and it clearly offers immense pleasure even today. Yet, it probably won't hit true prime time for another decade, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this be a 50- to 60-year wine. Bravo. Drink 2030-2080

The 2021 is a quintessential mountain wine from Mt. Veeder, but there's just enough polish to wrap it all together while avoiding any sense of rusticity.

The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge contains around 50% whole bunch. I prefer this to the Côteaux Bourguignon this year—there's more freshness and delineation. The palate is balanced with supple tannins. It has fleshy ripe red fruit tones and a sweet, pastille-like finish. Fine.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little swirling to unlock notes of blackberry preserves, warm cassis, and black raspberries, leading to suggestions of clove oil, pencil lead, and charcoal. Full-bodied, the palate is coated with muscular black fruit layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and beautifully knit freshness, finishing long and minerally. It's wonderfully classic in the best possible way!

I appear to have underestimated Dalla Valle's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate prior to bottling, as this blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot is now showing more harmony and length. On the nose, intense black cherries join dark, loamy earth scents, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rich and velvety, showing admirable concentration, texture and terrific persistence on the finish.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the wines of this very challenging vintage. Pliant and expressive, this mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon is all class. The softer style of the year is evident, but there are no hard edges, no awkward contours. Floral and spice notes play off a core of dark-toned Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. The 2202 is simply impeccably done in every aspect.

While billed as an entry level/second wine of the estate, the 2021 Asterisk is anything but, and it's a killer wine. Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot brought up in a mix of new and used oak, it has a deep ruby hue as well as a classic Sloan nose of meaty red and black fruits, iron, roasted herbs, graphite, and licorice. This Pauillac-like full-bodied, concentrated effort has ample mid-palate depth, supple tannins, and a great finish.
