About

Ratings:

92-94

The 2017 Zinfandel Howell Mountain offers a complex bouquet of plums, mulberries, blood orange, and incense to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple, elegant style on the palate. It doesn't quite have the oomph of the 2016, but I suspect it will put on weight over the course of its elevage and should drink nicely for over a decade as well.

Already bottled, the 2017 Zinfandel (100% Zinfandel) was aged for 16 months in French oak, 34% new. Medium garnet-purple colored, it gives up flamboyant cherry pie, raspberry preserves and blueberry compote notes with touches of Chinese five spice, Sichuan pepper, dusty soil, dried flowers and underbrush. Full-bodied, relatively taut and chewy, it sports bold freshness on the palate, laden with spicy red and blue fruit preserves, finishing long and perfumed. 1,123 cases were made.

Product Description:

Outpost was established in 1998 with the vision of producing wines that are a living, breathing embodiment of this magical place. Truly one of the world’s great Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel growing regions, the unique terroir of the Outpost vineyards – the hard, rocky red soil, high altitude, gentle cooling breezes and sunny western exposure – produces fruit of incredible intensity and richness, with a distinctive spice you simply cannot find anywhere else.Sharing this philosophy and intrigued by the potential of the estate’s magnificent vineyards, winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has crafted the wines from the beginning. Under Thomas’ expert guidance, Outpost grapes are harvested late in the season – by hand, at dawn – to preserve the full intensity and distinctive spicy character of the mountain fruit. The grapes are processed with as little manipulation as possible. Grapes from each block within the vineyard are fermented separately so that our winemaking team can be very selective about the lots that comprise the final blend. Wines are neither fined nor filtered allowing for the full expression of the vintages’ potential. - Winery
