About

Rating:

"The 2009 Valtosca is 100% Syrah aged for 12 months in new French oak. Notes of smoked game, bacon, mineral, violets, and blueberry lead to a juicy, sweetly-fruited, pleasure-bent Syrah with a lengthy, pure finish. Drink this excellent value over the next 6 years. "

Product Description:

"Planted where the rocky clay soils give way to sand, the Syrah at Casa Castillo is a relative newcomer to the DO of Jumilla. The climate of the region is not kind to the variety and making a convincing example requires a fair amount of work in the vineyard and cellar to make a wine that is fresh and balanced. Luckily the sandy terroir of Val Tosca is the coolest at Casa Castillo and after a short pre-fermentation maceration the wine is fermented in concrete. After about 12 days the wine is pressed and racked into 500 liter French oak foudres where it ages for 9 to 14 months depending on the vintage. About 40% new barrels are new each vintage. The result is convincingly fresh and meaty with notes of blue fruits and smoke which should really come as no surprise considering the talents of Jose Maria and the number of empty bottles from great Northern Rhone winemakers that line his tasting room walls." - Winery
