Aromas of rose, crushed aromatic herb and wild berry mingle with whiffs of scorched earth. Made with organically farmed grapes, the savory, medium-bodied palate has surprising concentration, doling out juicy black plum, ripe Morello cherry and baking spice alongside rounded, well-integrated tannins.

You get great value out of the Loacker Schwarhof 2017 Rosso di Montalcino Corte Pavone. It opens to dark and rich fruit intensity that extends beyond what you'll find in your standard Rosso. That pretty intensity goes a long way on the nose and the palate, with pretty notes of blackberry, plum and cherry that are the building blocks of its lasting textural richness. The wine delivers ample extract and lots of fresh acidity for balance. A case of this Rosso and a couple of trays of lamb lasagna would make for a low-cost party that clears the culinary bar, nonetheless.
