About the Producer:
"Boundary Breaks is a fascinating new producer in the Finger Lakes. Though it was begun by New York native Bruce Murray as a kind of retirement project, his plans for the fledgling label are impressively ambitious. While the majority of the new producers tend to start out by purchasing fruit and building their brand, Murray began with the vineyard. Ideally situated on the east side of Seneca Lake, the Boundary Breaks vineyard has to be one of the more impeccable and fussed-over vineyards in the Finger Lakes. Vineyard manager Kees Stapel claims to have made over 200 passes just for manual weed control last year, and indeed not a blade of grass is out of place. Interestingly, though Murray’s focus on the vineyard is borderline maniacal, he approaches the winemaking with far more flexibility. While his first vintage (2011) was made by Peter Bell at Fox Run, he currently employs three different winemakers at three different wineries, each of whom are responsible for various projects within the portfolio. Though fairly unconventional, this approach hasn’t seemed to diminish the quality of the wines—every wine I tasted across two vintages of Boundary Breaks last May was incredible. Nervy and precise, these are without doubt some of the top Rieslings in the Finger Lakes today. Murray currently produces around 4,000 cases of Riesling but he plans to expand that to 25,000 in the not too distant future.
