About

Rating:

96

"The quality on offer here is striking, marrying the best of attractive ripe red and dark fruit characters with earthy spice and more savoury complexity, some blue fruits too, really engaging. The palate is wrapped together with fine even tannin and holds a wealth of perfectly ripe sweet cherry and mulberry flavored fruit flesh. Fine texture, long and precise, it frames the finish up beautifully, leaving a gently toasty, precise and juicy impression. Drink in 2016." (06/14)

Wine:
"Wines produced under the Josef Chromy label showcase the varietal expression of our cool climate vineyard site. Elegant, subtle and complex, these wines will reward cellaring or provide great accompaniment to food now.

Vibrant Red undertones with dark cherry hues. Lifted dark cherry notes with underlying bright red berry fruits. Hints of cedar, toast and spice lead to a complex aromatic profile. Generous primary fruits of dark cherry and strawberry overlay subtle notes of tobacco, sassafras, sweet spice and toasty oak. The tannins are fine and firm, and in combination with the natural acidity create great focus and length." - Winery

Winery:
"Josef Chromy Wines has a state-of-the-art winery at the base of the vineyard at Relbia, just 10 minutes South of Launceston. The modern and minimalist exterior provides a home for some of the best winemaking equipment available. Fruit reception begins with a vibrating hopper that gently shakes the grapes into the destemmer, which has a smooth plastic cage to prevent damage to the delicate berries. The grapes are pumped gently into the press through a peristaltic pump, using the same technology that transfers live fish or pumps blood during heart bypass surgery.

A high tech German press enables juice extraction at low pressures, giving more delicate aromatic juices. All Pinot Noir is fermented in small batch open top fermenters and a pneumatic plunging device, co-developed by Josef, is used to gently plunge the cap and manage the extraction of colour and tannin during the fermentation. All the equipment and processes in the winery are designed to respect the delicate varietal flavours of the high quality, cool-climate Tasmanian fruit." - Winery
