"Mauro Veglio's estate is a small, family run affair that turns out excellent results year after year. A deep understanding of the Nebbiolo grape results in wines that are distinguished by signature aromas of wild berries, mesquite, white truffle and fragrant cedar. Tight tannins feel polished and dry in the mouth and this Barolo should age nicely for many more years."

"Very ripe fruit on the nose, with floral and dried berry character. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and impressive concentration that turns to cedar, berry and blackberry. Best after 2011. 500 cases made."

"Warm, generous dark fruit, spices and flowers come through in the 2005 Barolo Gattera. This beautifully balanced wine reveals an outstanding sense of proportion and an elegant, refined finish. This is the hottest of the microclimates in the Veglio stable, and his the vines with the most age, both of which were clearly a help in 2005. Mauro Veglio's 2005 Barolos offer lovely purity of fruit in the small-scaled style of the vintage. The wines will drink well early and look to be relatively early maturing. In recent years fermentations have been gradually lengthened and the percentage of new oak has been brought down. While these are undoubtedly positive developments, it is the vintage that speaks most eloquently with this set of new releases. "

"Good deep red. More subdued and medicinal on the nose than the Arborina; lower-pitched too. Then big, rich and fairly full in the mouth but less forthcoming today and not showing the clarity of flavor of the Arborina. The medicinal quality carries through on the aftertaste, which shows more serious tannins and very good breadth."

About the Producer
"In 1992, Mauro Veglio took over the family's vineyards to prepare them for the transition from negociant grape feeder to producer of fruit for his own high-end wines. Reducing yields through canopy management in exchange for high quality grapes, he and his wife Daniela constructed a modern winery where they then began producing a new wave of wines. Employing shorter macerations of two to three days, en lieu of the traditional three to four weeks, the couple also engaged temperature controlled rotary fermentations and French barrique (20% new) for aging.

"With Elio Altare, the father of modern Barolo, as his mentor, Mauro favors Burgundian style wines--elegant with high acidity and integrated tannins. And while his wines are accessible upon bottling, they're most certainly age-worthy.

"Adhering to "natural systems of cultivation and vinification", Mauro is practicing but not certified organic. He avoids use of any chemicals in the winery or vineyards--no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or flavor alterations. Through such natural methods, he enables the purest expression of terroir in the estate's four different Crus of Barolo: Arborina, Rocche dell'Annuziata and Gattera, and Castelletto.

"Consisting of approximately 12 ha in the communes of La Morra and Monforte d'Alba, Mauro Veglio produces 60,000 bottles annually, half of which are Barolo DOCG. With the exception of Castelletto, which belongs to his father-in-law, all other parcels have been farmed by his family for generations." - Importer
