Product Description:
"Let’s talk about the 2015 vintage which was a fantastic
year in Priorat. All the prevailing conditions were ideal
for producing a great CM. The visual aspect of the wine
is a sumptuous, intense ruby red colour. On the nose it
is both complex and pleasing with aromas of ripe red
and black fruits which marry perfectly with the notes of
liquorice and chocolate. On the elegant, beautifully dense
palate, we can detect hints of spiciness overlaid with smoky,
peppery woodiness. The tannins are persistent and tightly
knit with a finesse which allows an astonishingly prolonged
aftertaste. This is a thoroughbred of a wine encompassing
elegant, enduring qualities. Although quite magnificent
now, if you can hide it away somewhere for a few years, you
will not be disappointed!
The 20-hectare dry farmed, vineyard is located on schistous slate and
quartz soil (llicorella) and planted with 40% Garnacha (80-year-old vines),
20% Carinena, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah. The wine is
raised in Nevers and Allier oak with minimal intervention.
Rene Barbier likes to pick ripe grapes but without any raisins making it
into the vats. The red wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos
Mogador vineyard (it’s just one of a handful of wines officially awarded
the single-vineyard label by the Catalan wine institutions): Garnacha,
Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But the wine speaks more
of the place than the grapes, with notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, sage,
lavender, black cherries and a supple palate, full-bodied, with pungent
flavors, round, velvety tannins and a long aftertaste.
René Barbier led the original Priorat movement, proving that exciting and unique fine wines could be made in this forgotten corner of Spanish Catalonia. At Clos Mogador, he nursed back to life abandoned old vineyards planted on steep schist hillsides, where the ancient Grenache and Carignan vines had learnt to struggle against the aridity by sending roots 25 metres down in search of water and nutrients, yielding less than 10 hectolitres per hectare of intense, concentrated and supercomplex juice. The estate became firmly established as the number one address in the appellation, with a bulging press book to back this claim. But Clos Mogador is much more, a thriving ecosystem and a celebration of biodiversity, a blueprint for living “terroir”.
Robert Parker once said of Clos Mogador that the wines are "stunning examples of what Spain can produce but so rarely does". This is more true now than ever, because compared with the large numbers of ambitious “alto espreccion” Spanish wines that have come on stream these last few years, Mogador has not just concentration and complexity, but also energy, vitality and a genuine soul." -Importer
