Wine writer Stephen Brook, contributing editor to Decanter, once wrote in this UK-based wine magazine, that "There are many superlative wines to be found in Puligny, but few bargains."

It gives me immense pleasure to prove that statement wrong.

Puligny, neighbored by Chassagne and Meursault, is a village in Burgundy's Cote de Beaune. Top-notch terroir, Puligny is home to 4 Grand Cru vineyards, including Le Montrachet, as well as 17 Premier Crus. What is it about Puligny that makes it so great?

Slopes and soils
The vineyards are sloped to provide drainage and sun exposure. The soils are rich in limestone, which is just about one of the best soil types for reasons related to water retention and drainage, deep root structure and a healthy restraint of vine growth. The wines of Puligny, in contrast to those of its neighbors, are more mineral-driven and structured. Descriptions include words like taut, tight, precise, focused, linear.

Paul Chapelle was a well-known consultant in Burgundy, advising at such estates as Michel Lafarge and Francois Jobard. He founded his eponymous domaine in 1976, and his daughter Christine Beck Chapelle now runs the show. She continues to follow her father's traditional Burgundian style, which emphasizes terroir, i.e. minimal new oak use and carefully managed yields. As the importer notes, "Domaine Paul Chapelle is one of the best-kept secrets in Burgundy".

If you think you know Chardonnay...if you think you know Bourgogne Blanc...it's time to let this baby Puligny blow your mind!
