"Editors Choice. Elegant and almost ethereal, this wine is tantalizing and irresistible. It shows sophistication, from the mysterious, earthy bouquet to the complex, well-aged brioche and peach flavors, as well as the almost gentle texture and refined finish. While full bodied, the wine has great balance, as all the tasty components join together to weave their magic."

"Seamlessly combining the cherry-like fruit and vinosity of Pinot Noir with an absolute wealth of autolyzed yeast and very clear in its grasp of what a serious Rosé should be, the latest J. Schram version is a fascinating wine of extraordinary layering, depth and polish. It is explosively bubbled and its very fine mousse lasts and lasts, and, while showing a bit of finishing grip that indelibly marks it is as a true Rosé, its altogether remarkable sense of refinement puts it in a class all its own."

"Another effort, and one that I intend to purchase and serve to guests, is the 2007 J. Schram Rosé, which has a North Coast appellation and is 51% barrel-fermented (1,200 cases). The wine is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. This is a killer sparking rosé, and really the best sparkling wine I've ever tasted from California or the New World. Rich, full-bodied, with notes of strawberry, kirsch, cherries and rose petals. The wine has terrific intensity, wonderful freshness, a full-bodied, gorgeously proportioned mouthfeel and a long, long finish.

Schramsberg, founded in 1862 by German immigrant Jacob Schram, fell victim to hard times in 1912 but was resurrected by the Davies Family in 1965. The quality seems to be going from strength to strength and these were the best sparkling wines I've tasted from them. Current owners Hugh and Monique Davies look over 43 acres on Diamond Mountain, and utilize fruit sourced from cool-climate areas ranging from Carneros, farther south in Marin County, to the north in Anderson Valley. There are a number of relatively small cuvées that are offered to their membership, and largely never seen in the commercial marketplace at retailers or on restaurant wine lists."

"Expressive and refined, this balances complexity with bold richness. Aromas of strawberry, roasted almond and yeasty brioche open to long and layered flavors of blood orange, shortbread and fresh ginger."

"North Coast, aged 7 years before release. A relatively shy nose is comprised mostly of red cherry, citrus, strawberry and discreet yeast nuances. There is good verve to the utterly delicious flavors that are supported by a firm but not aggressive mousse as well as solid depth on the clean, dry and refreshing finish. This is really quite good and for my taste drinking perfectly now though it will certainly hold with no difficulty."

Product Description:

"Schramsberg, the pioneer of premium-quality American sparkling wines, is proud to present its fifth vintage of J. Schram Rosé. This wine is the result of a singular focus to produce a California sparkling rosé comparable with the finest made anywhere in the world. This wine is made from the vintage’s best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir stainless-steel tank and neutral French oak barrel wine lots, which are created from Schramsberg’s collection of 110 cool-climate vineyard sites in Carneros, Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast and Marin. Following secondary fermentation in the bottle, this exceptional wine was aged on the lees for seven years in Schramsberg’s historic caves, and was then hand-riddled and finished with a select brut dosage.

J. Schram Rosé is the epitome of grace, style and elegance in a glass, it lends itself to be served as an apéritif, with a first course or a light main course. Courses might include consummés, cedar planked lobster, scallop ceviche, grilled swordfish, fresh crab, grilled poultry or roasted pork loin.

The warmer-than-normal winter, along with relatively dry weather, allowed for an earlier budbreak with flowering beginning in the early part of May. Mild temperatures continued through July, paving the way for harvest towards the beginning of August. The vintage is remembered as a drawn-out one due to cool temperatures in August and September, with only a brief heat spike around Labor Day. With no rush to harvest, the grapes were picked at their optimal ripeness for sparkling wine, with delicious flavors, low sugars and high acidities." -Winery
