Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From loamy marl soils the 2013 Sylvaner Zellberg L'Hermitage shows a delicate bouquet with lemon and finest fruit aromas along with herbal and flinty flavors. Round, lush and very gentle on the palate this medium-bodied and lemon-fresh wine is marked by its enormous minerality and the persistently salty finish with pineapple aromas in the long aftertaste. Enjoy this top Sylvaner over the next 10 or 15+ years.
Product Description:
Patrick Meyer, a non-conformist winemaker, took over the 9ha domaine from his mother in 1982, converted it to organic in 1985 and to biodynamics by 1995.
100% Sylvaner from Zellberg (aka ‘L’Hermitage’), which is mostly comprised of marne with some sandstone and silt. Unlike his Mer et Coquillages, where he blends in Riesling to make the wine more accessible in youth, for the Zellberg he lets Sylvaner stand alone. He thinks this wine starts to show itself complexity 2-3 years after the harvest.
2013, like 2012, turns to be another ‘classic’-style vintage, with lower alcohol levels and higher balancing acidities. From a practical standpoint the vintages were quite different for Patrick. 2012 was characterized by a prolonged harvest and fermentations that, in some cases, lasted 10-12 months. In 2013, by contrast, Patrick began his harvest on September 23rd and was finished harvesting every varietal ten days later. All of the fermentations were complete by November. Biodynamic
