Mosel Fine Wines
"This delivers a superb nose of fresh herbs, spices and white minerals. The wine is packed with juicy and smoky flavors on the palate and yet, far from being over-powering, the finish is just airy and spicy, leaving one with a mouth-watering salty and fruit-driven feel. This still needs a little bit of bottle age to develop aromatically. It could then easily exceed our already high expectations. It is very impressive! 2014-2019"
Product Description:
"The "Grosse Eule" (Great Owl) is a curious bottling. It is both a sort of Grosse Gewächs, a "Grand Cru" dry wine, as well as a nod to the way German Rieslings were made in the past, before the fashion for sweet Riesling. This is made from some of the greatest parcels of the Ellergrub; the grapes see a 24 hour maceration. The juice goes into older barriques (some are sourced from Rebholz in the Pfalz). The older barriques do not add any flavor to the wine, but rather provide a more oxidative environment in which the wine develops. The wine that emerges is singular, filled with dark fruit and spice on the nose, a fine pear and apricot haze. The palate is compicated, labyrinthine, cerebral, both nutty and saline at the same time. Yet the true thrill is the texture, the creamy haze of the wine, the lighter-than-air effect of Riesling with breadth and depth, with no edges and yet finely attenuated, with power yet no weight. Statistics: 97 Oechsle, 9 grams residual sugar, 7.7 acidity." -Importer
