About

Product Description:

Château Kalian has ten hectares of vineyards in the village of Monbazillac. The vineyards are located in the “lieu dit” Bernasse along hills that rise to 180 meters in elevation. The soils are argilo-calcaire with varying depths of clay on top of deep beds of limestone. Four of the ten hectares are particularly rich in silex (flint). Planting is at a density of 5,000 to 5,500 plants per hectare with 9 hectares in white varieties (75% Semillon, 15% Muscadelle and 10% Sauvignon Blanc) and 1 hectare in red varieties (50% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot). The average age of the vines is 55 years. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2009 and was certified as of the 2012 harvest. The winery was established by Anne and Alain Griaud in 1992 when they bought 4 hectares of vines and is run today by their son, Kilian, who has expanded the vineyard to its present size of 10 hectares. “Selection de Grains Nobles” In Monbazillac, the classification “Selection de Grains Nobles” requires the must to have a minimum of 255g/L of sugar naturally derived. No addition of sugar or must concentration is allowed. Chateau Kalian 2011 is produced from 85% Semillon and 15% Muscadelle. All grapes were hand harvested over a period of three and a half weeks to insure the proper level of botrytis. Harvesters made five different passes through the rows between the dates of Oct.6th and Oct. 30th. In 2011 yields were 19hl/h which produced a wine with 13º Alc. and 110g/L of residual sugar.
