"Smooth and spicy, with ripe cherry and dried blueberry, tar and tobacco flavors, bringing a lot of flavors to the party as the finish lingers against fine tannins and bright acidity. Drink now through 2014. 500 cases made." - 91 Points - Wine Spectator
WINERY: SCHUBERT is a new winery in New Zealand founded by Kai Schubert. Kai is a graduate from the German Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim and his dream had always been to establish his own vineyard and winery one-day. This dream came true in form of "Schubert Wines" which is located in Martinborough in the Wairarapa Valley and operated by his partner Marion Deimling and Kai.
WINERY TASTING NOTES: Intense black cherry with aromas of black currant and some floral notes. Fruitiness combines with meaty, fleshy aromas and a touch of smoke and tobacco. Quite full-bodied with a richness but still very elegantly textured and the acidity gives it a refreshing character. Whilst surprisingly open already, it has plenty of tight but fine tannins for a long development.
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS: Warm, dry spring and summer with some rainfall during autumn.
DATE OF HARVEST: 29 March & 3 April 2006
HARVEST & VINIFICATION:
Block B is a selection of the Dijon Pinot Noir Clones; specifically the clones 115, 667, 777, 114 and 113. Hand-picked and careful selection of grapes. 100% de-stemmed, cold-maceration and fermentation in stainless steel vats and left on “skins” for 3 weeks. Aged in 50% new and 50% used French oak barriques for 16 months.
DATE OF BOTTLING: 19 November 2007
This wine also received is 88 Points from Stephen Tanzer of International Wine Cellar and 87 Points from Neal Martin of Wine Advocate.
