Salomon's dark, cherry-colored 2016 Blauer Zweigelt is a picture-book representative of this genuine Austrian grape variety that is more often than not interpreted just pompously and over-oaked. This is fresh and untamed on the pure and earthy/spicy nose that displays a refreshingly fruity and fabulous floral bouquet of violets, licorice and sous-bois intermixed with wild berries, such as mulberries, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, but also thick-skinned plums and cherries (ancient varieties, of course, no EU-conformism here). On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, silky-textured, round and enormously fruity yet dry and refreshing red with fine and spicy tannins. This Zweigelt is reminiscent of many Gamays (with more color) and Syrahs (with less concentration). In any case, this 2016 Zweigelt is a highly authentic and finessed red wine with honest 13% alcohol. It's perhaps the finest or most natural and authentic Zweiget I have ever tasted. Word. Bottled with a natural cork. Tasted in October 2019.
