A killer effort is the 2015 Zinfandel Papera Ranch, from a vineyard planted in 1934, and made from 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan. This is a good-sized wine, given its 15.4% alcohol, but like all of Mike Officer’s wines, the alcohol never shows. Moreover, he clearly gives the fruit plenty of attention so that it can strut its ripeness and full-bodied character, given the fact that he rarely uses more than 20-25% new French oak, and of course, the wines are bottled with no clarification by fining or filtering. This should drink well for up to a decade or more.
A great success story, Mike Officer’s Carlisle Winery continues to not only protect heritage old-vine sites in Northern California, but to also turn out a bevy of realistically priced, delicious, consumer-friendly wines, primarily from Zinfandel, although Officer can also turn a trick or two with Grenache, Petite Sirah and Syrah."

"The 2015 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is dark, plush and inviting, as it so often is. Darker tonalities of fruit flesh out effortlessly. Pliant, succulent and inviting, the Papera is hugely promising."
"Full-bodied. Concentrated. Opulent. These are some of the descriptors we often hear applied to our wines. However, we also hear the words elegant, balanced, complex. Yes, through hard work in the vineyard and winery, we believe you can have it all, the best of both worlds. Our approach to winemaking is simple, yet difficult. We prefer to intervene in nature’s process as little as possible. We often rely on uninoculated fermentations and use minimal new oak. We rarely fine or filter. However, we are not dogmatic and will intervene if we feel it results in a higher quality wine while still remaining true to the vineyard.
Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% Zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of Carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. Carignane is a late ripener and high in acidity making it a curious choice for this very cool site. Nevertheless, it seems to work, producing a powerfully elegant Zinfandel. Twenty percent new French oak. Filtered but unfined." -Winery
