About

94

The 2014 Zinfandel Estate is primarily Zinfandel, but there are other grapes in this mixed black field blend, including Peloursin, Négrette, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Carignan. This is a sensational Zinfandel, with an explosive nose of pepper, raw meat, blackberry, black raspberry and cherry. Deep, chewy and dense, it finishes at 14.8% natural alcohol. The lusty, exuberant style of this wine makes it irresistible already, and it should continue to drink well for another 5-8 years.

93 Wine Enthusiast

Juicy and balanced in red and black berry, this is meaty, smoky and accessible wine, as complex and sultry as any of its vineyard or block-designates, yet softer and rounder, ready to play. A handful of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Peloursin and Negrette are included.

92 Wine Spectator

Distinctive violet, blueberry and raspberry aromas open to layered and expressive flavors of smoky beef, cracked pepper and dried sage. Drink now through 2024. 1,982 cases made.

Product Description:

Our flagship wine, Benchmark Zinfandel is sourced from vines originally planted by Italian immigrants in the early 1900s. Seamless, with unparalleled clarity of flavor and aromas, this wine is a testament to the hands that have tended these vines for over a century. This little lane is undeniably special, undeniably unique. Varieties now all but extinct except where they are inter-planted in a few old Zinfandel vineyards--Peloursin, Negrette, and Petite Sirah-- add structure, color, and acid. The rocks, the dirt, the morning fog and the afternoon sun form an ideal microclimate that exists nowhere else. These special characteristics allow us to create wines of gravity and depth balanced by bright acidity, redolent of both the grit and the grace of our long history.
