Newcomer François Grenier has turned in a star performance in only his second vintage. The 2015 Saint Joseph Chaussenot represents his top wine, sourced from the lieu-dit of the same name in the village of Saint-Désirat. It's a granite terroir, reflected in the wine's firm but fine tannins and crisp-edged structure. Violets, blueberries and blackberries are joined by hints of vanilla and cedary spice, but look for those oak elements to integrate better with the fruit over the next couple of years. It's a medium-bodied wine, yet it offers plenty of flavor without excess weight and a long, spicy-savory finish.

The 2015 Saint Joseph Chaussonot comes from the more northern part of the Northern Rhône yet has enough richness and depth that I’d have guessed it was from the southern part of the appellation. Gorgeous cassis, blackberries, smoked earth, pepper, and liquid violets notes give way to a medium-bodied, rich, powerful Saint Joseph that has building richness, a great mid-palate, and ripe tannins. It’s just another smoking good 2015 that already offers pleasure yet will keep for 8-10 years.
