"Alluring, with black tea, toasty wood spice and incense notes leading the way for a core of melted licorice, blackberry and briar. A mouthwatering tobacco note hangs on the finish. Drink now through 2016. 224 cases imported. -JM"

"(15% alcohol): Good medium red-ruby. Wilder, scented, northern Rhone-like aromas of dark berries, game, spices and peppery herbs. Sweet and densely packed but more penetrating than the Syrah 393, giving the middle palate an impression of less body. But this juicy syrah is tighter today. Finishes with serious tannic spine and rising length."

Winery Tasting Notes
"Medium deep, bright red colour. Upfront wild dark berry fruit, black pepper and nutmeg nose. Full, rich palate packed with complex, ripe fruit and a spicy, peppery overlay. A little more structured than usual from the exceptional 2009 vintage, expected best between 2013 and 2020. Ideal with a variety of rich and slightly spicy meat dishes."

Yield 6 tons/hect (43 hl/ha). 8% Petit Verdot included from Keermont vineyard."

About de Trafford
"De Trafford Winery is situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm set at the top of a dramatic valley above Stellenbosch, 380m up between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, right at the end of the Blaauwklip road, between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

The history of wine growing on this mountain farm started with the purchase of the property in 1976 by the Trafford family as inaccessible grazing land. Many of the high altitude slopes were deemed suitable for high quality red grape varieties. Unfortunately, due to the absurd quota restrictions, planting a commercial vineyard had to wait 18 years. In 1983 a small vineyard was established to produce experimental wines – consumed by family and friends! These were our learning curve years (1984-1991), which included lots of help and advice from local winemakers and working experience in France, particularly in the Bordeaux area."
