There's a pleasing creaminess to the intense tannins of this harmonious, full-bodied red, offering crushed cassis and black raspberry fruit that shows accents of lavender and rosemary, with licorice, espresso and loamy earth notes. An iron fist in a velvet glove, this should unfurl beautifully with age. Best from 2020 through 2035. 175 cases made, 120 cases imported. — AN

The 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino Colle alle Macchie is perhaps the most important of Tabarrini's single-vineyard wines. The tannic Sagrantino grape is aged in large oak casks for three years. Grapes are planted in clay soils with full southern exposures. This is a balanced and very hearty red wine that possesses striking richness and density. The wine's firm structure has been softly tempered, thanks to the long barrel-aging period. Some 3,500 bottles were produced.
