About

Rating:

95+

"From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent [Auslese] that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020."

Product Description:

"The Brauneberg is one of the most famous vineyards in the Moselle and has a worldwide reputation. The name Juffer derives from the former possession of a nunnery, which had extensive possessions there. The single layer Juffer-Sonnenuhr encompasses the heart of the mountain, where the best plots are located in the middle of rocks around a sundial. The Brauneberg with an incline of up to 80% is parallel to the course of the river in southern exposure. The floor consists of blue-gray Devonian slate with a very high proportion of stones, as well as inclusions of iron minerals, which make the mountain appear brown in winter.

Hence the name: Brauneberg. The ownership of our winery in Brauneberg dates back to 1643; the purchase of a parcel is documented by a sales contract dated April 17, 1643. The wines of the Brauneberg impress with their elegance and the clearly defined aromas of citrus fruits, white peaches and ripe yellow fruits. In addition to these opulent fruit aromas, the iron content in the soil adds spice and lively minerality to the wine" - Estate
