"If only the ever-changing rules of the VDP allowed Klaus Peter’s label to pinpoint the origin of this incredible wine, which comes exclusively from a tiny 0.33 ha parcel of Rotliegend sandstone surrounded entirely by the characteristic yellow limestone of the Kirchspiel, it would certainly be Keller’s most distinctive, and possibly his most sought after “Großes Gewächs,” his would-be “Grandest Cru of all.” The problem? Only “trocken” and “noble sweet” wines are permitted if the label names a single vineyard. And that excludes the “RR,” which Keller ferments in a single oak barrel he places near the drafty cellar door in order to prevent the wine from fermenting to complete dryness. He is convinced that the brooding, razor-like minerality of Riesling from this unique iron-rich parcel benefits from an otherwise imperceptible extra two or three grams of residual sugar over the upper limit of “trocken.” Importer
