Stunningly clear and smoky on the pure and mineral nose opens the 2014 Oberemmeler Hütte Riesling Spätlese (AP #8), which is a light and filigreed Riesling with juicy fruit, great elegance and stimulating piquancy and salinity. This is dangerously quaffable already today, but will be even more so in 20 or 30 years.

Intense perfume of heliotrope, honeysuckle and lily-of-the-valley is accompanied by intimations of the poached pear, passion fruit, candied lemon rind and vanilla that then feature on a delicate, creamy yet persistently juicy palate. Hints of cilantro and musk add green as well as exotic notes that may strike some tasters as at odds with one another and out of place. The finish here is admirably juicy; the sense of sweetness ideally supportive; and scents in the empty glass hauntingly fascinating.
