Citrus colored, cool, clear and crisp on the nose, the 2013 Riesling Steiner Schreck serves all those who prefer a rather reductive and linear style of Riesling from crystalline soils. The wine offers delicately floral aromas on the nose intermixed with oriental spice flavors, tobacco, citrus and Austrian apricots (Marillen). Full-bodied, very deep, and concentrated on the palate this is surely the most powerful, complex and expressive Riesling (besides the 2013 Steinzeug Riesling) of the family estate's impressive series of 2013s. Still young (with CO2) but full of thrill, piquancy and potential this extremely salty and persistent wine is probably one of the most impressive Rieslings of all Austria in 2013, Wachau included.

Product Description:

"The Grillenparz is steep, but the Schreck is the steepest of all of the Krems Valley sites. Everything must be done by hand here and the yields are naturally low. The soils are blue slate and there is something Germanic in this wine. Indeed, Urban and Dominique's goal is to become the riesling estate of the Kremstal. Riesling is their passion grape and they maintain close ties to friends in the Mosel Valley where their twins were born one year ago. All of the rieslings are bottled with about 5 grams/liter of residual sugar, because "a certain sweetness belongs to riesling," says Urban, though it isn’t perceptible. Like the best of Germany’s dry rieslings, Stagard's are detailed, pure and juicy. The Schreck is the most "German-like" of the range, displaying apples, stone fruit and a hint of apricot with a very taught, linear structure. You’d never guess by its complexity that it’s only 12.7% alcohol." - Importer
