About

Rating:

91

"Citrus in color, the 2013 Westhofener Steingrube Riesling trocken has nicely pure and fresh aroma of limes and chalk. In the mouth it shows a piquant attack, and good concentration with a piquant finish that has a fresh and rather citric aftertaste. It is less rich and generous than the Morstein but with more thrill and piquancy." (10/14)

Product Description:

With 2013, Seehof's Steingrube is perhaps his top bottling; it is one of the top scoring dry wines of the vintage. This is a powerful dry Riesling of immense stature, incredible purity and finesse. The Steingrube vineyard is one of the Rheinhessen's greatest. In fact, the less-than-2-acres of Steingrube that Seehof farms is positioned directly below Abtserde, and is sandwiched between Morstein and Kirchspiel. It is the rockiest vineyard they have, with massive chunks of limestone bubbling to the surface. The wine reflects this minerality, with an awesome density and structure.

It is also one of the great values of the vintage with a price that comes in at a considerable discount when considered among the top dry wines of the Rheinhessen." - Importer

Winemaker:
"Florian Fauth, the winemaker at Weingut Seehof, lives only a few kilometers from Keller in Westhofen and farms many of the same legendary vineyards that Keller farms (Kirchspiel, Morstein); he is also Klaus Peter Keller’s brother-in-law. And in tasting his wines, you feel the family ties immediately. He has learned a lot from the master.

Florian is one of this region's young stars, a winemaker who has been gaining considerable press and momentum in Germany. The 2013 vintage marks the first time his top wines have ever been available in the U.S.; indeed his Grand Cru single-vineyard bottlings arrived only last month." - Importer
