James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com
"What a beautiful wine here with a delicacy and brightness. Floral, subtle and complex. Full-bodied yet so intense and complex. A glorious wine. Great texture. Finesse. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold." Reviewed 9/25/2015
Product Description:
About
HEISSENBERG means « the hot mountain », because of its very heat-driven microclimate. It
is a very steep hillside, south-facing, in the town of Nothalten. It is the very last sandstone
hill before the junction point with the granitic part of the Vosges mountains, which extends
to the south. The soil is composed of pink sandstone along with gneiss. It gives birth to a
particularly rich Riesling, sun-tainted yet with intense minerality, balanced by the mother
rock's powerful imprint.
The 0.75 ha vineyard is planted in high-density and farmed using Biodynamic principles, as
is all the domaine's vineyard since 1998. It produces very tiny, concentrated grapes, with an
intense aromatic and tannic expression. The wine don't necessarily has a strong acidity, but
is rather structured by the dry-extract, and noble bitterness from the terroir's mineral
character.
It is a great gastronomic Riesling with a pronounced personality, which requires spicy
courses of white meats, sauced fishes, or aged hard cheeses. Above all, the matching with
foie gras is always superb.
