Product Description:

"Named after Gaëtano’s mother and daughter, this cuvée is a blend of 60% Primitivo and 40% Susumaniello – a little-known red-wine grape found in Puglia, and thought to be an offspring of Sangiovese. Its name is derived from somarello, meaning “donkey”: just like the hard-working donkeys, this high-yielding variety is capable of bearing heavy loads. To control the yields, Pietra does a “green” harvest at the beginning of veraison. The vines grow on calcareous clay soil, at an elevation of 500 to 900 feet. The Primitivo grapes are harvested late August, and the Susumaniello ones late September. Fermentation and aging in stainless steel tanks for 6 months, then another 4 months in bottle before release. Elegant notes of spices and ripe red fruits (currants) mixed with sage. The palate is round and velvety." - Importer
