About

Rating:

90-92+

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards unfurls to reveal notes of raspberries, mulberries, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, its ample core of gourmand but succulent fruit is structured around ultra-fine tannins. This is very promising and will be hard to resist in its youth.

Product Description:

The Brouillard vineyard of 1.5ha (planted between 1947 and 1955) is located at the foot of the village of Volnay and received it’s name from a small forest in the feudal era. The slope provides good drainage and has southeast exposure for good ripening. Hand-harvested into small crates, yields are around 30 hL/ha. Fermentation takes place naturally in gravity fed vats with indigenous yeasts and about a 15 day maceration time. Ageing takes place in oak barrels with a maximum of 20% new oak, for 14 to 18 months depending on the vintage. After one racking without pump, bottling is done without fining or filtration. - Importer ///// "As I wrote last year, the disarmingly modest Thierry Glantenay produces a lovely range of elegant, pure and intense Volnays and Pommards at his hillside winery overlooking the Marquis d'Angerville's Clos des Ducs. In the cuverie, he tells me, he is more and more content to let temperature and alcohol do the work of extraction for him, keeping pigéage and rémontage to a minimum. He also gently presses the grapes, and élevage, without racking until the mise en bouteille, takes place in at most 30% new barrels. His 2018s have turned out very well, delivering generous, textural wines that remain structurally refined and lively—wines that will drink well young but also age gracefully. This under-the-radar estate comes warmly recommended.' - William Kelley, Wine Advocate
