About

Rating:

95

The Westerhold Family Vineyards 2015 Pinot Noir from Bennett Valley ($52) comes from a drought vintage. The grapes’ thick, protective skins help produce a dense, unctuous texture: a mouthfeel that creates a common thread in the three wines we tasted from the area. Winemaker Russell Bevan created a densely delicious red, deep and dark-hued with a nose of peppered plum and earth tones. Red velvet cake is a flavor characteristic of this wine.

Product Description:

"The 2015 Westerhold Family Vineyards Pinot Noir is a wine that was defined by its vintage and AVA. As the drought was so intense in 2015 and there was virtually no water in the soil early on in the growing season, the vines were pushed to protect the grapes, pulp and seeds by developing exceptionally thick skins. This led to incredible textures which were noticeable even in the fermenters - after only five days, we knew the wine would have dense, oily textures. The flavors have really developed in barrel and show amazing spice and complexity, which complement the core of cherry and plum. This is a rich, seductively deep Pinot Noir that will provide pleasure for at least a decade." ~ Russell Bevan, Winemaker
