This shows real complexity on the nose with herbs such as rosemary, daffodils, chamomile, apples and pears. The palate is quite dense and oily but shows real freshness and verve with no shortage of acidity. Very well made.

This year, Ott included additional plantings from the Engabrunner Stein, so that we end up with a co-fermentation of Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Neuburger and Muskateller, most but not all of which are literally im gemischten Satz i.e. inter-planted. The grapes – now scattered among some half-dozen parcels, most in the commune of Feuersbrunn – were picked in early October; and a significant share of whole berries was included in the ferment. Greenhouse-like floral and leafy scents mingle with anticipations of the apple and stalk celery that go on to supply crunch, juiciness and mouthwatering salinity on a polished, buoyant palate. The long, refreshing finish perpetuates the floral and verdant intrigue that was introduced in the nose.
