About

Rating:

93+

"The 2009 Barolo Cascina Dardi-Bussia is bold, direct and focused, with a huge center of fruit and plenty of tannin. Although not quite as flattering as some of the other wines in the cellar, the 2009 has a certain inner strength that could very well help it blossom into an overachieving wine. Sweet tobacco, leather, herbs, plums and smoke begin to emerge, but only with great reluctance. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2009 Barolo is going to need considerable time for the tannins to soften, it will always be a ripe, flashy wine in the style of the year. In 2009, Fantino made just one Barolo, and it is terrific." (07/14)

Product Description:

"Alessandro Fantino continues to impress for the superb, pedigreed wines he turns out of his tiny, garage-like winery in the old town center of Monforte. Fantino honed his craft over the 18 years he worked with Bartolo Mascarello, and his wines share some aesthetics with those wines, although Fantino’s vineyards are in Bussia, rather than Barolo and La Morra, which naturally lends his wines the more balsamic, spiced profile that is typical of that site.

Fantino is one of the last remaining top-flight under the radar estates in Piedmont. When the wines are on, they are fabulous." Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

"Barolos from Bussia tend to have deep color and rich fruit and while they don’t lack the classic tannic structure of Nebbiolo from this part of the world, they are not nearly as hard as the Barolos from the southside of Monforte or from Serralunga. This fact does not preclude the Fantino Baroli from aging but makes them delightfully approachable relatively young. The Fantinos are also blessed with some of the oldest vines in the entire Barolo zone, thanks to the fastidious care given to them by Alessandro and Gian Natale. Planted in 1946 and 1947 and pruned in an old style that is very labor intensive, they produce grapes that would be the envy of any Barolista." - Importer
