"Smoky, earthy, rustic kind of aromas, dusty, meaty kind of vibe, has a dustiness through the palate too but richer and juicier and more concentrated than expected. Pushes powerful and comfortably across the palate. Has a stemmy influence, gentle mezcal wafts. Bouquet garni spice. Man, this is drinkable - opens and opens and opens. Drink 2013-2019"

"Medium garnet in color, the 2011 Izway Mates Mataro is usually a blend but this year is made of 100% Mourvedre (called Mataro in Australia). The nose is bright and shows black pepper, lifted red berry aromas with some dusty earth notes. Full-bodied and funky on the palate, it is rich with some carbonic character, medium levels of chewy tannins, refreshing acid and a long finish. Drink it now to 2016+. " Reviewed 2/2013

Product Description:

In general, the fruit is prettier and more aromatic with lighter color and texture than previous years. We used more whole bunch components in our ferments to build structure and the wines have benefitted enormously from this. The Mataro for our 'Mates' comes from two vineyards owned and cared for by the famous Adrian Hoffmann in Ebenezer. The 'Sand Block' and 'David's Block' were planted in 1999 & 2000 respectively from old vine select cuttings. Sand Block lives up to its name and is planted on about 6 foot of sand over orange clay. David’s Block is planted on traditional Ebenezer Terra Rossa or red brown earth over red clay. The two components came together perfectly and produced a stunning wine. - Importer
