Anselmo Mendes is a Portuguese wine producer, producing wine from the Lima Valley, Douro, and the Moncao and Melgaco regions of Vinho Verde. The extensive wine portfolio also includes a small selection from Terceira Island.
Founder Anselmo Mendes acquired the estate in 1997, the inaugural vintage was released in 1998. A new winery was built in 2008 as well as extensive restructuring of the vineyard. Today, Anselmo Mendes cultivates over 130 hectares (321 acres) of vineyards.
The flagship wine of the Anselmo Mendes portfolio is the Parcela Única, a varietal Alvarinho wine from a single plot of vines. The grapes are hand-picked in the vineyard prior to fermentation in 400-litre French oak barrels. Aging continues in these barrels for 9 months with bâtonnage on the whole lees. A further 12 months of aging in the bottle occurs prior to release.
There are multiple other Alvarinho wines in the portfolio including the Anselmo Mendes Tempo, the Alvarinho Private, and the Single Installment bottlings. Other wines include the Magma Verdelho which is grown in the volcanic soils of Terceira Island. This imparts a strong minerality to the hand-picked and cold-fermented white vareity.
