"Even better than the straight Côtes du Rhône, the 2012 Côtes du Rhône 100% is almost a kitchen-sink blend, with 40% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and the rest Cinsault, Carignan and Marselan. Aged 12 months in 80% concrete tank and 20% in barrel, it dishes out plenty of black raspberry, raspberry, crushed flowers and ample minerality on the nose. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that has beautiful concentration, a layered, balanced feel and ample length. It’s another rocking Southern Rhône from this team.
This is another impressive lineup from oenolgist Xavier Vignon, who works with the likes of Raymond Usseglio, Le Nerthe, Marcoux and Grand Veneur, to name a few. These are all negociant wines, but they obviously have access to some serious vineyard, and the winemaking is impeccable. Looking at these latest releases, his 2013s buck the vintage stereotype with their ripe, textured profiles, and his 2012s are certainly up with some of the top wines of the vintage as well. In addition, prices remain more than reasonable here. If you haven’t yet discovered these wines, now is a great time. As a side note, I’m halfway through a case of his 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape, with every wine showing brilliantly. These can drink nicely in their youth, yet age beautifully as well."
"Almost black robe, with discreet orange notes. On the nose: underbrush, mushrooms, red and black ripe fruits, white flowers, sweet flowers like violet, then soft spices including cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, as well as peppery notes. and then balsamic notes (scrub, menthol, licorice) and empyreumatic (toasted, roasted)
On the palate we can find soft spices, then black fruits and flowers. Very long and soft tannins." - Winery
