About

Rating:

89+

(From 50-year-old vines planted on stony red clay soil on the ridge of a hill, facing southeast and southwest): Very pure aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit, minerals and herbs struck me as almost riesling-like. Penetrating and minerally, with enticing spicy high notes. Quite dry and vibrant but reticent and stony today, even a bit austere; this will need time to show its underlying complexity. (I suspect it would have been easier to appreciate early on if it had a bit more sweetness--the r.s. is around two grams per liter.)

Product Description:

The Szepsy family have cultivated vineyards in Tokaj since the late sixteenth century and are credited with the discovery of Aszú and setting down the formula used to this day. István Szepsy was a key figure in the formation of the Royal Tokaji Wine Company but has been producing his own wines since 1987. Today, István Szepsy is the leading producer whose benchmark wines have inspired for the current movement of young producers throughout Tokaj. He focuses on radical limitation of yields and hand selection of all of the grapes. Today, the estate is comprised 63 hectares of vineyards in premium sites throughout the village of Mad but produces less than 4,000 cases annually. -- Importer
