Thierry Pillot's 1.2ha parcel sits next to Les Caillerets, making a tag-team of outstanding white wine terroirs. Focussed, nuanced and poised, as the domaine's wines invariably are, this is especially praiseworthy in a vintage when Chassagne didn't always deliver. Subtle, chalky and rigorous, it's a wine that engages the mind as well as the palate.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos St Jean 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with orange pith, mango and light petrolly scents (similar to those I discerned on the Les Mazures). The palate is well balanced with a sapid opening. Slightly honeyed in texture, this is definitely a spicy Chassagne with ginger and lemongrass lining the persistent finish. This has the upper hand over the Les Mazures. (NM)
