"Stony oyster shell accents underline the peach and ripe apple fruit in this rich, harmonious white. The structure shines on the finish, extending the flavors and adding a lemon zest note. Drink now through 2020. 2,500 cases made. -BS" Reviewed 2016.

"Stony oyster shell," that's how Wine Spectator's 90-point review for the 2014 Auvigue Macon Salutre begins. Stony oyster shell. Hmmm...sounds like a summer white to me...also sounds like a Chablis, doesn't it?
This 2014 white Burgundy is actually from the south side of the Cote d'Or. It's from the Maconnais, a land of tremendous value Chardonnays.
The Maconnais is decidedly warmer than its northern neighbors, yielding fleshier whites with riper fruit notes. Yet, it also shares with other regions of Burgundy something quite key: limestone-rich soils. That's what gives this wine that stony oyster shell character. That's what makes this wine really shine.
And you don't have to wait for it! That's the best part. You can drink this all summer. On your boat. On your porch. On your couch where no one cares if you're wearing pajamas.
