"The flagship 2002 Brut Clos des Goisses is simply stunning in this vintage. Seamless, ripe and beguiling, the 2002 is pure harmony in the glass. Dried pears, apricots, flowers, red berries and spices are some of the many notes that inform this towering, aristocratic wine. At once vertical yet endowed with serious length, the 2002 stands out for its breathtaking balance and overall sense of harmony. Layers of fruit built to the huge, creamy finish. This is a great showing from Philipponnat. The 2002 was disgorged in June 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2032."

"It had been a year since I last crossed paths with a bottle of the brilliant 2002 Clos des Goisses from Philipponnat, and time seems not to have touched this wine at all. The bouquet remains deep, pure and stunning in its youthful bliss of apple, incipient notes of the nuttiness to come, orange peel, caraway seed, fresh-baked bread, very complex minerality, a bit of smokiness and citrus zest in the upper register. With air this gets more and more floral in a low key and subtly musky manner that is totally enchanting. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, young and rock solid at the core, with totally refined mousse, a youthful chassis of acid, brilliant focus and balance and a very long, young and intensely flavored finish that will be pure magic when the wine finally apogees in another five to ten years. As I said last year, this remains a brilliant synthesis of a top vintage and one of Champagne’s most profound terroirs and as fine a young vintage of Clos des Goisses as I have ever had the pleasure to taste. 2018-2045."

"Tightly knit and firm, this is lightly chalky in texture, but shows a sense of finesse overall, offering notes of ripe poached apple and pear, black currant, blanched almond, licorice and ground anise. Disgorged February 2012. Drink now through 2025. 1,000 cases made. -AN"

"This highly-anticipated release does not disappoint, although its youthfulness is still nearly painful at the moment, its flavors wrapped up in a tightly-wound, chalk-driven structure. It demonstrates an outstanding sense of refinement and finesse, with a silky texture and a tense, elongated shape on the palate; above all, it finishes with a complex, multi-dimensional fragrance, anchored by a piercing note of saline minerality and persisting with exceptional length, nuance and poise. This will be stunning, but it will likely take another decade or even two to fully reveal its character and depth—if you open it now, be sure you have additional bottles in the cellar for the future. Last tasted: 12/11."

Product Description:

"Clos des Goisses is the most powerful of all Champagnes. It is produced using grapes grown on a unique, pure chalk hillside with a 45 degree slope facing due south, in Mareuil-sur-Ay. Its name certainly reveals its true nature; in the old Champagne dialect, Gois or Goisse means a very steep slope. This is always a vintage wine with a very low dosage. Vinified mainly in wooden casks with no malolactic fermentation, it is distinctively full-bodie with an exceptionally long finish. A very great wine as well as being a very great Champagne, Clos des Goisses is specifically intended as an accompaniment to haute cuisine. Mineral and intense, it makes an unforgettable match for dishes with strong flavours: game, truffles, caviar and cheese." - Winery
