11.5% alcohol. An equal parts blend of Carignan from granite and Cinsault from koffeeklip soils, both old vine. 100% whole bunch, some crushed with the feet. Very fresh and vivid with lovely cherry and raspberry fruit. Pure, grippy and structured with nice acidity. Very lively with purity and vibrancy.

90 Wine Spectator

Slightly high-pitched, with a streak of shiso leaf amid the cherry and pomegranate fruit, giving way to light sanguine and pepper accents through the racy finish. Built on purity and cut. For fans of the style. Drink now through 2019. 200 cases made.

Johan Meyer makes this wine from organically farmed bush vines, fermenting it mostly as whole bunches, the only addition a small amount of sulfur at bottling. It comes across as a country wine, refreshing in its rusticity, with the crunchy fruit of a raspberry shrub and some austere tannins to back it up. Serve it with something equally rustic, like ratatouille.

Product Description:

Johan "Stompie" Meyer's Mother Rock label is focused on discovering exceptional parcels of sustainably-farmed vines grown on a variety of soil types. The brand identity is rooted deep in the South African wine industry with Chenin Blanc at the root of the whites and field blends of the reds. These are terroir-focused wines made to offer drinkability and enjoyment, and it doesn’t hurt that the labels are beautiful. Meyer has long-term contracts with some of the best growers in the Southern Cape determined to farm their sites organically. In the winery there is no SO2 added before or during fermentation but it’s a natural element that comes from the vines and you will always end up with some SO2 in the wines. That being said the wines are very lightly sulfured before bottling for preservation and stability. Ultimately ‘Mother Rock’ is about showcasing the best and purest expression of South Africa’s diverse terroir.
