Sam Kim - Wine Orbit
Aged on lees for 230 days and matured in oak for 31 months, this unique offering shows seductively complex aromas of dark fruit, assorted nut, game, tapenade and cocoa on the nose. The palate delivers terrific weight and concentration, wonderfully complemented by plush texture and silky tannins. Sturdy and structured yet opulent and substantial with an impressively long velvety finish. At its best: now to 2032.

Far lower in alcohol than the other premium Jeanneret reds (regularly 15-16%+). On lees for 230 days, and in keeping with the house style, in oak for 31 months. I'm not convinced that cabernet needs to be in oak for this long; the wine is far oakier than most cabernets on the market. There is plenty of dark chocolate through the finish, and all aspects of the wine are impregnated by the oak, but it doesn't taste 'woody'. Rather, the oak is limber, resinous and savoury. So, if you love oak (and many do), then this is very well executed and stylistically committed, with the fruit more than up to the task, the alcohol in balance. It is, all told, very well handled ... I personally feel it's a bit much, but that's my proclivities coming through.
